ENGL245 - Film and Narrative Tradition

During the course of the semester, we will be examining a variety of films that have either changed the way we view film narrative or exemplify the various changes taking place in narrative film. Beginning with a focus on the impact of the advent of sound in film, once seen by some critics as a passing trend rather than a landmark moment in film history, this class will study various important developments in filmmaking and style to understand how narrative has changed in American cinema throughout the 20th and 21st century. Ultimately, students will be able to critically analyze this dominant media form, utilizing the appropriate terminology and criteria employed in film studies to make informed verbal and written arguments.
