This course explores how films make meaning and influence cultures. Taking an international perspective, we will cover basic elements of film narrative and fundamentals of film technique, including cinematography, editing, and sound. The course aims to foster students' understanding of the formal choices involved in filmmaking and how those choices affect audiences. Format: lecture, screening, and discussion. Requirements include midterm and final exam, three short papers, viewing journal.
