ENGL305 - Shakespeare and His Contemporaries: An Introduction

Readings in Shakespeare and his contemporaries, including Kyd, Marlowe, Webster, Fletcher. Elizabethan and Jacobean theatrical and social contexts. The focus of this course is Elizabeth and Jacobean drama in theatrical and social context.  We will read Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard II, Macbeth, and Hamlet as well as Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy, Marlowe’s Edward II, Webster’s Duchess of Malfi, and Fletcher’s The Tamer Tam’d.  The final unit will consider Shakespeare as our contemporary, looking at Afro-Canadian playwright Djanet Sears’ Harlem Duet (1995) as an adaptation of Othello.  Assignments include three 8-10 page papers, occasional quizzes and smaller assignments, and active class participation.
