ENGL241 - Introduction to the Novel
0101-0108 - Michael Olmert

This course will consider eight novels in-depth, not in terms of chronological development (this is not a course on the history of the novel), but rather to look carefully at the tricks and delights that novelists have up their sleeves. The writers chosen will range among such writers as Elizabeth Bowen, Muriel Spark, Chinua Achebe, V.S. Naipaul, Evelyn Waugh, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Martin Amis, Dickens, Graham Greene, Alan Garner, Kingsley Amis, Nick Hornby, Emily Bronte, Yann Martel, Julian Barnes, Graham Swift, and more. You will also be required to go see a play (TBA) on the D.C professional stage, and write a short report about it. Three exams and two other papers are required.
