English 469C: The Craft of Literature: Why Write Poetry? This course is structured around a series of essays and writing exercises that explores the art of poetry and its enduring necessities. It will be a laboratory, rather than a workshop, for investigating the energies that drive us to write poems. We will look essays and poems by Adrienne Rich, Yusef Komunyakaa, Seamus Heaney, Terrance Hayes, Ellen Bryant Voigt, Louise Gl├╝ck, Natasha Trethewey, and Langston Hughes, to name a few. Students will write short responses to the essays, give class presentations, and produce a portfolio of poems based on exercises.
