ENGL440 - The Novel in America to 1914

Prerequisite: Two English courses in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.

Survey of the American novel to World War I. Cultural and philosophical contexts; technical developments in the genre. Authors such as Melville, Wells Brown, James, Sedgwick, Chopin.

Ghosts, hauntings, hidden secrets: This course will focus on the rise of Gothic fiction in the United States. We'll begin with Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland and read such authors as Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry James, Louisa May Alcott, and Edith Wharton. Two papers, a number of short "response" papers, a midterm, and a final exam.
