ENGL499 - Advanced Poetry Workshop: Advanced Poetry Workshop
Syllabus:
Section(s):

The culminating workshop in the undergraduate poetry workshop sequence.  This workshop assumes knowledge of basic poetic craft, such as: sentence/line relationship, strophic coherence, verse movement, cadence/rhythm/meter, trope, the dynamic between musical & rhetorical figuration, narrative & argumentative structure, voice/persona, and the like.  Students can expect formal assignments with particular technical requirements.  All poems will be graded; students will have ample opportunity to revise. In addition to writing poems, students will complete exercises in memorization and brief explication.  Students can expect assigned readings in required texts.  This is a rigorous course designed specifically for advanced students; it requires an investment of time and effort, and promises an appealing return: greater knowledge of poetic language and form, and the opportunity to exercise integrities of imagination that only comes from concerted practice.

Repeatable to 9 credits if content differs. Formerly: ENGL497.

Prerequisites:
