ENGL472 - African-American Literature:1945 to Present
Syllabus:
Section(s):

This course begins with the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. We will look at key texts in African American literature, trying to see how these texts respond to the era of integration ushered in by Brown. We will consider these texts in relation to historical, political, social, as well as literary contexts of the 20th and 21st century. How do literary texts, produced during the era of racial integration, recall, re-imagine, represent, and critically examine the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Arts Movement, the feminist movement, LGBT issues, and what some consider a postrace moment in the age of Obama.

Prerequisites:

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
