ENGL448B - Literature by Women of Color: Women Writers of the African Diaspora

This course examines a selection of black women’s contemporary writing from a number of geographic locations across the African Diaspora. Although these texts will be analyzed as part of a shared literary tradition, we will take into account points of thematic and structural similarity as well as of difference. The reading list may include works by Erna Brodber, Dionne Brand, Nalo Hopkinson, Marlene Nourbese Philip, Gayl Jones, Edwidge Danticat, Jamaica Kincaid, Chimamanda Adichie, Marilene Felinto, and Danzy Senna. The syllabus also will include readings in literary theory, feminist theory, cultural studies and diaspora studies, as well as film, photography, and painting. Requirements include 2 papers, a presentation, and a final exam.
