This course will investigate the literary transformations and innovations of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British literature, with a particular focus on representations of authorship, literary form and history, and the cultural roles of literary production. We will consider authors such as John Donne, Ben Jonson, Aemilia Lanyer, Lady Mary Wroth, John Milton, Aphra Behn, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, Eliza Haywood, Samuel Johnson, and Frances Burney, among others. Students will take two exams and write two significant pieces of literary criticism. Daily preparation and participation are also required.

Prerequisites: 

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
