ENGL408 - ENGL408 - The Battle of the Sexes (or, "Are Women Writers of the Renaissance Any Good?")
Syllabus:
Section(s):

This course will examine the writing of women in the Renaissance in context. We will explore questions of literary merit--and how this value is reckoned--through the reading of both canonical and non-canonical texts. Recognized authors such as Sidney, Nashe, Herbert and Donne will be juxtaposed with less recognized authors such as Sidney (Mary), Whitney, Lanyer, and Wroth in order to provoke discussion on the subjects of gender and canon formation. In addition to class participation, grades will be based upon one short (4 pages) and two slightly longer (6 and 8 pages respectively) essays during the term.

Prerequisites:

Two English courses in literature or permission of department.
