Consideration of key works in African American literature and culture that explore the experiences of people of African descent in the U.S. Relationship between literary texts, cultural products (film, music, painting, cartoons), historical events, and social formations. Examines a range of texts and genres (autobiography, slave narrative, travel narrative, poetry, essays, fiction), and their contribution to national literary tradition.
