This is a one-semester lecture course in which we will study approximately eight plays by William Shakespeare. The course will meet twice each week in a large-group lecture and once each week in a mandatory discussion section. We will probably read Merchant of Venice, Henry IV Part One, Hamlet, Measure for Measure, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus, and The Tempest. Lectures will also touch upon the political, economic, and social context in which Shakespeare did business. In addition to participation in discussion sections, students will write two papers and will take reading quizzes as well as a final examination.
Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of department.
