ENGL639B - Myth: Theme And Theory: Arthurian Myth And Legend

This course in the growth and development of a myth will begin with the earliest historical appearances of the figure known as Arthur, and trace the enlargement of that figure and the mythologizing of his world through history, folklore, fairy tale, and romance.  Treatments of the story will include major Celtic, French, and English texts including the Welsh Triads, Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain, the Mabinogion, the romances of Chr├ętien de Troyes, the stanzaic Morte Arthur, the alliterative Morte Arthure, and Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur.

Two writing assignments during the semester developed into a final presentation.
