ENGL494 - Editing and Document Design
Syllabus:
Section(s):

This course teaches students the basics of editing and designing non-fiction workplace documents. Students learn to use editing/proofreading symbols and the Track Changes/Comment features in Word, doing close edits of short documents that focus on developing effective prose for the document's audience/purpose. Two books are required. In addition to the in-class editing, workshopping, and homework, there are three major projects: a document design project (collaborative), a short style guide, and a comprehensive edit of a longer document of the students' choice. The final exam asks students to practice once again the editing and document design skills learned throughout the semester. A solid foundation in English grammar and mechanics is an absolute prerequisite for success in this course.

Prerequisites:

ENGL391, ENGL393 or equivalent.
