ENGL358A - Literature of the Chicano Movement

This course will examine the drama, fiction, poetry, and prose that emerged out of the Mexican-American civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Students will also learn about the movement's origins, its relationship to the political landscape of the day (especially the black civil rights movement), its controversies, and its legacies. The class is reading intensive (about 125 pages per week) with grades based on frequent in-class quizzes, a comprehensive final exam, and two essays.

Prerequisites: 

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of department.
