ENGL245 - Film Form and Culture

After an introduction to film studies, this course--based on film screenings, lectures, assigned readings, and essays--will trace the narrative tradition of film through a process that involves the historical development of film art, its evolution in technique and theme, the cinematic adaptation of literary texts, and the cultural context of these (mainly) American films. The course will focus on the most influential director in the history of Hollywood, Alfred Hitchcock, but also include other directors’ classic and rediscovered films.
