A survey of American literature written between the founding of the colonies and the Civil War. Students will read works by such authors as Bradstreet, Taylor, Franklin, Freneau, Jefferson, Irving, Bryant, Poe, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Whitman and Melville. Class discussion will focus on close analysis of texts, as well as on broad literary, intellectual and cultural developments in antebellum America.
