ENGL454 - Modern Drama

The course will concentrate on British drama over the past three decades, reading about 25 plays, including several from Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, and Alan Bennett, plus single plays from Pam Gems, Christopher Hampton, David Hare, Brian Friel, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Roy Williams, Joe Penhall, Caryl Churchill, Hanif Kureshi, Alan Ayckbourn, Patrick Marber, John Mortimer, and Simon Gray. By way of run-up to all this, we will also read plays from Ibsen, O_Casey, and Chekov. Twenty pages of writing, four exams, and attendance at a play in D.C. are required.
