Job Placement Record

Graduates of our PhD program have been very successful at securing tenure-track jobs in higher education for which they have been trained as scholars and teachers.

These PhDs currently hold jobs at the broad range of institutions in the United States from large public universities (including the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Ohio State, Rutgers, Hunter College-CUNY, Pennsylvania State University, Clemson University) to private colleges (including Bard, Mt. Holyoke, Iona College, Carnegie Mellon University, and Fairfield University).  Some have accepted positions abroad at Zhejiang University (China) and Qatar University. Others have secured postdoctoral appointments at major university research centers and through programs such as the ACLS New Faculty Fellows competition. A number of our PhDs who initially secured visiting appointments at institutions then move on to tenure-track positions at other schools.

According to the Modern Language Association—the professional organization representing English literature, language, and composition among other fields—only about a third of English PhDs go into tenure track teaching positions. This statistic reflects both the constriction of the job market following the 2008 financial crash and the desires of some graduate students to pursue alternate career paths.

While most of Maryland PhDs do gain tenure-track jobs, others actively seek alternative-academic or non-academic positions. Former students have pursued careers at non-profit organizations, cultural heritage foundations, advocacy centers, and federal agencies (such as the National Endowment for the Humanities), a process facilitated by the University of Maryland’s ties to the institutional culture of Washington, DC.
